Livestock refers to one or more domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities such as meat, milk, fiber and labor. The type and importance of animal species that are used for livestock production varies between regions.

Today, livestock farming is almost always done intensively – at least in developed nations. In the USA alone over 99% of livestock is farmed in this way. Intensive farming allows for the ability to raise livestock  in a cost-efficient manner thus maximizing profit.

Livestock is the world’s largest user of land resources, representing almost 80% of all agricultural land.
