While the name “sheep” can apply to many species, it almost always refers to Ovis aries. There are over 1 billion sheep worldwide.
Sheep provide an important source of income for many farmers, mainly for their meat and wool, which is harvested by shearing and is the most widely used animal fiber. Sheep are also occasionally raised as dairy animals and for pelts too.
The goat is closely related to the sheep, and there are over 300 distinct breeds worldwide.
Goat farming is not as popular in the USA as other countries, partly because goat meat is not widely consumer. However, in recent years goat farming has been on the rise for their milk, cheese, and fibers – mohair and cashmere.
