Triazine Tolerant Canola Varities and High Stability

Choice of crop variety is a key element of success of any field cropping activity. Canola varieties are classified into types that offer unique herbicide resistances as well as a range of yield, quality and disease resistance or tolerance.

The following is a brief comparison of the key attributes of most varieties available for sowing in Victoria in 2011.

TRIAZINE TOLERANT VARIETIES

Triazine Tolerant – ATR-COBBLER *

Early to early-mid maturing, high yielding and medium-short height. Blackleg rating of MS. Developed by Nugrain. Released 2008. Tested as NMT040. Marketed by Nuseed.

Triazine Tolerant – ATR-MARLIN *

Mid to mid-late maturing, high yielding with medium height. Tested in NVT 2006-2009. Blackleg resistance rating MR. Bred by Vic DPI/Nuseed. Released 2008. Tested as ATR-423. Marketed by Nuseed.

Triazine Tolerant – ATR SNAPPER

An early to mid maturing variety targeted at the later end of that window. Nuseed indicate good vigour with even maturity and a medium plant height. Anticipated blackleg rating is MS. Bred by Canola Alliance, tested as NT0049 and released 2011. Marketed by Nuseed.

Triazine Tolerant – ATR STINGRAY

An early variety. Nuseed indicate good vigour with uniform, short to medium height and a compact pod set. Anticipated blackleg rating MR. Bred by AgSeed Research and DPI Victoria, tested as NT0045 and released 2011. Marketed by Nuseed.

Triazine Tolerant – CBTMARGYLE *

Mid season variety. Canola Breeders indicate high oil and moderate protein content. Blackleg rating MR. Bred and marketed by Canola Breeders.

Mid season maturing variety. Good seedling vigour and flowering uniformity. Pacific Seeds indicate a good blackleg resistance rating of MR (Provisional). Bred and marketed by Pacific Seeds.

Early maturing. Targeted for low rainfall areas. High yielding. Vigorous early growth, more tolerant of moisture stress. Moderate oil and protein content. Blackleg resistance rating MS-S. Released in 2007. Bred and marketed by Canola Breeders.

Triazine Tolerant – HURRICANE TT *

Mid to early maturing variety, slightly earlier than Bravo TT. Pacific Seeds indicate good yield, oil and protein content. Shorter plant type and compact (lower bulk material) for swathing and harvesting. Ideally fits low to medium rainfall areas, exhibits good vigour. Blackleg rating MR. Released 2008. Specialty Oils - MONOLA™76TT *

A mid-season variety of medium height and blackleg rating of R-MR. High oil content well suited to deep frying applications. It is suitable for production in most regions, one day earlier maturity than Monola 77TT. Tested as NL042. Developed by Nuseed Pty Ltd, grown under contract with a premium to Nuseed Crop network.
