Establishing Your Pasture:
A good psture begins with soil preparation. Step 1 is to take a good soil sample and improve soil conditions according to soil test recommendations. Contact your local extention service for assistance.
Step 2
is to prepare a good seedbed. If possible, use a no till method of seeding. When renovating your existing pasture spray out as many of the weeds and unwanted grasses as possible. Avoid
planting to deep or too far apart. Ideal depth for seeding is 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
Step 3
all seed needs good moisture to establish well. Irrigate if necessary and plant during spring or fall for best seeding success. Frost seeding can be accomplished by broadcasting during the winter months. Plants should be allowed to become well established before heavy grazing. Once plants reach 8 to 12 inches, clip or lightly graze down to no less than 2 to 3 inches high.
Maintaining Your Pasture:
Reduce or eliminate weeds on a regular basis. When possible irrigate, especially prior to and during the hot dry months. Maintain adequate fertilizer by doing soil testing regularly and fertilizing accordingly. Fertilizing and lime should spread 2 to 4 times per year. Eventually all pastures thin or develop bare spots. Prevent weed infestation and introduce improved varieties by regulary overseeding.
