Long-term Plan for Crossbreeding Beef

Long-term plan

  • When putting a long-term plan on paper decide:
  • How many of each breed are on hand.
  • How many cows or heifers will need to be bought each year and where they will be sourced.
  • How many and of what breed need to be sold each year.
  • When bulls need to be bought and of what breed.
  • Which breed of bull will be joined to which breed of cow.

The following table is a six-year plan for a pure Angus herd changing over to Angus x Shorthorn cows, joined to both Hereford and Limousin bulls with all offspring sold.

The original Angus cows are gradually reduced over the six years until there are only five remaining. The numbers of Angus x Shorthorn cows are built up by buying 20 each year. Total female numbers remain at 100. Each year, 18 culls are sold including non-pregnant heifers and cows and the oldest and lowest producing Angus cows.
