Turf may refer to either:
- Lawn, an area of grass maintained for decorative or recreational use;
- Golf course turf and other manicured sporting greens; or
- Sod, the surface layer of ground consisting of a mat of grass and grass roots, sometimes used as a construction material
Turf farming is a relatively recent new farming operation driven by a demand from landscape designers,sports field managers, architects and home-owners for an instant lawn in front of new buildings and at sporting facilities, rather than waiting for a lawn to establish from seed. The industry has become viable because of the specialised machinery that has been developed for growing, harvesting, transporting and laying turfs that has made lawn establishment by turf more economic. Turf industries tend to establish on areas of high quality soils near larger cities, generally as close as possible to their markets.
