Food, Oil, Skin & Beauty Products
Hemp seed provides low cost high quality food for humans and animals. They contain 20-25% protein, 20-30% carbohydrate, essential fatty acids, 10-15% insoluble fibre, vitamins including carotene, and minerals including phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulphur, and calcium, with modest amounts of iron, and zinc, the latter of which is an important enzyme co-factor of human fatty acid metabolism.
A handful of seeds provides the minimum daily requirement of protein for adults, since it contains all eight essential amino acids in the correct proportions that humans need. In the entire plant kingdom hemp seeds are second only to soybeans in their total protein content. But unlike soybeans, the proteins in hemp are easy to digest.
Hemp seeds can be used as whole hemp seeds, hulled hemp seeds, hemp seed oil or hemp seed meal.
We can use the oil for salads and cooking, body care products, detergents, and dietary supplements. The meal can be used to make protein powder, beer brewing, animal feed and flour for baking. Whole hemp seeds make snacks, used in baking and cooking, in a coffee blend, and in nutbutter. They can also be used to make cheese, confection, spreads, and dips. The hulls provide dietary fibre, animal feed and mulch.

The grade of the hemp seed oil determines its use. The grade of the oil is categorised as; nutritional, body care, or technical grade depending on age and means of pressing:
- Nutritional grade hemp seed oil. Cold pressed in an oxygen free environment, this oil better resists oxidation, giving it an extended shelf life.
- Body care products with hemp seed oil. Refined oil.
- Technical grade hemp seed oil.
Hemp Seed Meal
Edable hemp seeds
Hemp seed meal is the product that remains after the seed has been crushed and the oil extracted. Hemp seed meal still contains 25% protein and provides an excellent dietary source of fibre for humans and animals. It can be made into hemp milk and cheese, non-dairy icecream, burgers and anything soy can be made into.
Hemp seed meal can be ground for flour to make breads, pastas or pancakes. The meal can also be used to brew beer.
Hulled Hemp Seeds
Vagan pancakes made with hemp seeds - no eggs.
Hemp seeds contain a more complete protein that is more nutritious and more economical to produce than soybean protein. Hulled hemp seeds can be used to produce virtually any product that is made from soybean including: tofu, veggie burgers, butter, cheese, ice cream, and milk. Hulled hemp seeds can be toasted for snack food or ground for use in baking and cooking. The addition of hulled hemp seeds to animal and poultry food improves the nutritional content of the feed.
Whole Hemp Seeds
Hemp beer
Hemp seeds, either whole or hulled, can be ground into a nutritious flour that can be used to produce baked goods such as pasta, cakes, and breads. The seeds are made up of 25% protein, 30% carbohydrate, and 15% insoluble fibre, and vitamins and minerals. The whole hemp seeds can be cold-pressed for oil, or hulled to extract the seed core.
Beers and ales based on hemp seeds are considered to taste superior to other beers.
