Canola Conventional Varieties and High Stability Varieties

Choice of crop variety is a key element of success of any field cropping activity.

Canola varieties are classified into types that offer unique herbicide resistances as well as a range of yield, quality and disease resistance or tolerance.

The following is a brief comparison of the key attributes of most varieties available for sowing in Victoria in 2011.

Blackleg ratings are for 2010, and the legend for the annotations are:

  • VS = Very Susceptible
  • S = Susceptible
  • MS = Moderately susceptible
  • MR = Moderately Resistant

CONVENTIONAL VARIETIES

Conventional – AV-GARNET *

Mid maturing variety of medium height. Nuseed indicate very high oil content. Very good blackleg resistance, with a rating of MR. Bred by Vic DPI. Tested as RT125. Released 2007. Marketed by Nuseed.

Hybrid Conventional – CBTM AGAMAX *

Early to mid maturing variety. Canola Breeders indicate excellent early vigour and yields in low to medium rainfall environments with good oil content. Anticipated blackleg rating MR. Marketed by Canola Breeders.

Hybrid Conventional – HYOLA 50*

Mid to mid-early maturing hybrid with excellent blackleg resistance and a blackleg rating of R. Suits medium rainfall areas, manageable height, good standability, exceptional yield potential and has excellent seedling vigour. Bred by Canola Breeders International and Pacific Seeds. Tested as CBI4403. Released in 2007 and marketed by Pacific Seeds.

Hybrid Conventional - CBTM TAURUS *

Very late maturing “winter” type potentially a winter grazing option in high rainfall zones. Canola breeders indicate excellent early vigour and yield with good oil content. Anticipated blackleg rating of R. Marketed by Canola Breeders.

CONVENTIONAL HIGH STABILITY VARIETIES

Hybrid High Stability Oil – VICTORY 3001*

Early to mid maturing high stability hybrid developed by Cargill and Vic. DPI. Good blackleg resistance, R-MR, and yield potential. Tested in NVT 2007-2009, released 2008. Victory 3001 will be grown under contract production with a premium for Cargill. Tested as 06H932.
